A Showdown on the Trails: See the Difference
Select a category below to learn more about how the Subaru Outback compares to the Toyota 4Runner.
PERFORMANCE
Subaru Outback

Whether heading to a remote campsite or the corner store, having an efficient, easy-to-drive SUV is a must. If you’re looking to pass gas station after gas station and tear around sharp corners with ease, only one vehicle will have your back. Let’s find out which one it is!

Going the Extra Mile—or 10

Both models bring plenty of power to the party, and only the Subaru Outback will help you keep that fun going for all the miles to come. It boasts an EPA-estimated 26 city/32 highway MPG.* The Toyota 4Runner is only capable of an EPA-estimated 16 city/19 highway MPG.

The Outback can take you even farther with its Auto Start-Stop System. Whether you’re idling at a stoplight or waiting to pick up your buddies on the trail, the engine will automatically shut off to save fuel and cut down on emissions. It will fire right back up when you take your foot off the brake. The 4Runner lacks a similar system.

Carving up the Corners

Active Torque Vectoring will come in handy when rounding a sharp turn. It works to apply braking power to the inside wheels, which results in better handling and more effortless control. What’s the best part? It’s only available with the Subaru Outback.

OFF-ROAD
Subaru Outback

There’s fun to be found around every corner. That’s why you need an SUV that can take you everywhere you want to go. The Outback and the 4Runner have built a legacy through their all-terrain capabilities, so they’re sure to put on a good show.

All-Wheel vs. 4-Wheel Drive

Did you know there’s a difference between all-wheel drive (AWD) and 4-wheel drive? It’s true! AWD uses a computer system to intuitively control each wheel’s power distribution, making it capable in both on- and off-road scenarios. 4WD, however, provides the same amount of power to all four wheels, which is purely built for off-road scenarios.

The Subaru Outback comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, so it’s ready for any trail that lies ahead. The 4Runner, on the other hand, is only available with a 4WD system and comes standard with 2-wheel drive.

Meet X-MODE®

X-MODE® is only available with the Subaru Outback. It optimizes the all-wheel drive system for off-road engagement to provide optimal traction on various types of terrain. Dual-Mode X-MODE® is also available. It includes Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes for optimal capability on the most challenging trails.

CONVENIENCE
Subaru Outback

Your SUV is home base on every adventure. That’s why it needs to be comfortable, sensible, and convenient. Both models offer an easy-to-clean interior. Only one provides a superior set of safety systems, however, and it’s time to see which one it is!

Cleanup Made Simple

The best adventures always include a little mud—sometimes sand and a spilled coffee, too. The Outback makes cleanup simple with its available StarTex® water-repellent upholstery. The 4Runner offers a similar synthetic upholstery called SofTex®.

Confidence Is Comfortable

You’ll be able to enjoy the ride to the fullest in either SUV thanks to their suites of smart safety systems. EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology—standard with the Outback—comes with:

  • Pre-Collision Braking System
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning
  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering
  • Automatic Emergency Steering

The standard Toyota Safety Sense™ of the 4Runner includes several similar systems. The DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System, however, is only available with the Outback. It monitors driving patterns and alerts you to drowsy or distracted driving so you can pull over for a break and refocus on the journey ahead.
